Health and Wellbeing at Blackwood Primary School
Health and Wellbeing is at the heart of the school's ethos and vision. The School is a caring, supportive school that promotes pupils' health and wellbeing through a range of rich learning experiences and its unique provision. The high level of care and working relationships between staff and pupils contribute strongly to pupils' health and wellbeing.
The school values all pupils with a strong pupil voice represented with the schools Senedd and Pupil Leadership Group. The school has a strong caring ethos with a clear focus on creating a welcoming, positive learning environment for pupils and staff.
Roots of Empathy
The school is proud to continue its partnership with the Roots of Empathy Program. The aim of the program is to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults. The focus of Roots of Empathy in the long term is to build the capacity of the next generation for responsible citizenship and responsive parenting. In the short term, Roots of Empathy focuses on raising levels of empathy, resulting in more respectful and caring relationships and reduced levels of bullying and aggression.
The school welcomes a family into a chosen year group classroom; pupils and the school's lead practitioner observe the mother and baby's feelings, intentions, and attachment relationship over a period of 27 visits.
School staff have observed an increase in social and emotional understanding from pupils during, and following the session and an increase in their knowledge of parenting and in cognitive and emotional empathy.
