At Blackwood Primary School we believe that Languages and literacy are at the core of communication. They enable us to make sense of what is heard, read and seen, helping to develop our understanding, empathy and our ability to respond effectively. English is the main language of communication, teaching, learning and assessment at Blackwood Primary School. However, we are committed to promoting the Welsh language and in recognising and celebrating other languages.

Pupils at Blackwood Primary School develop their skills through a wide range of Oracy, Reading and Writing activities. We use exciting texts and hooks to engage pupils and to foster their love of literature. Pupils’ reading and spelling skills are developed using resources such as Oxford Owl which can also be accessed at home.

Pupils engage in a wide range of writing opportunities including both fiction and non-fiction genres. They are always encouraged to present their work to a high standard.
